JANE RUBY’S “I DREAM I WAKE I WRITE” WINS FIRST PLACE IN THE 2024 ROYAL DRAGONFLY BOOK AWARDS
Celebrating Excellence in Literary Achievement
Phoenix, AZ — The winners of the prestigious 2024 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards have been announced, and Jane Ruby’s “I Dream I Wake I Write” has earned First Place in the Collection of Short Stories category. This honor highlights Ruby’s exceptional storytelling talent and her ability to blend memory and imagination seamlessly.
Jane Ruby’s writing journey began with an underground high school newspaper, a bold endeavor that nearly jeopardized her graduation. Reflecting on the experience, Ruby shares, “Oh, I just remembered: I wasn’t expelled but was suspended—only for a day as a ‘token form of discipline.’ The office staff actually liked me because I volunteered as an office page (not to mention they loved my newspaper, hyuck, hyuck). The suspension happened just a few weeks before graduation. I was a senior, and not being able to walk across that stage would have been quite the scene!”
Over the years, she refined her craft through technical writing in colloidal and surface chemistry while balancing an adventurous lifestyle of volleyball, race-sailing, and wilderness exploration. Her passion for storytelling ultimately inspired two self-published novels: “The Azurite Encounter” (2010) and “Voiceless Whispers” (2017).
Her award-winning book, “I Dream I Wake I Write,” began as a series of creative writing assignments for an online college course. Encouraged by top grades and a growing collection of stories, she compiled a captivating mix of vivid memories, dream-inspired tales, and futuristic adventures. Illustrated by Daniel Villanueva, the book’s visuals enrich the narrative, offering readers an immersive experience.

• Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences, John Carroll University (1986)

She has also been an Arizona Authors Association member since 2010, serving as Vice President and Treasurer, and previously as Literary Contest Director (2019–2024).
